Why is your RAM running slower than the box says?

If your RAM shows a slower speed than the box promises, XMP or EXPO is switched off. RAM ships defaulting to a safe JEDEC speed, usually 2133MHz or 4800MHz, and the rated 3200MHz, 5600MHz or 6000MHz number only applies once you turn on one BIOS setting. It takes about two minutes and needs no tools.

The short version

  1. Restart and enter BIOS (usually Delete or F2 at boot).
  2. Find XMP (Intel boards) or EXPO (AMD boards) and enable Profile 1.
  3. Save, exit, and check the speed in Task Manager.

How to fix it

  1. Check your current RAM speed first.
    Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager, click Performance, then click Memory.
    You should see a speed number in MHz on the right. If it's well below what's printed on your RAM's box or sticker, XMP is off.
  2. Restart the PC.
    Click Start, then Restart, not Shut down. You need the machine to go through its boot screen again.
    The screen will go black, then show your motherboard's logo.
  3. Enter the BIOS.
    As soon as the motherboard logo appears, tap the Delete key repeatedly. On some laptops and prebuilts it's F2 instead.
    You should land on a blue or grey screen with menus, not the Windows desktop.
  4. Switch to Advanced or EZ Mode if you see a simple screen.
    Most boards open in a simplified view. Look for a button or key hint labelled Advanced Mode, often F7.
    You should see tabs across the top such as Ai Tweaker, OC, or Overclocking.
  5. Open the memory or overclocking tab.
    On Intel boards this setting is called XMP. On AMD boards it's called EXPO, sometimes labelled DOCP on older MSI boards.
    You'll see it currently set to Disabled or Auto.
  6. Select Profile 1 and confirm.
    Most kits offer one or two XMP or EXPO profiles. Profile 1 is almost always the one matching the speed printed on the box.
    The screen will usually show the new speed, voltage and timings updating automatically.
  7. Save and exit.
    Press F10, then confirm Yes when asked to save changes and reset.
    The PC will restart on its own. This can take slightly longer than usual the first time.
  8. Confirm the new speed in Windows.
    Once you're back at the desktop, open Task Manager, Performance, Memory again.
    The speed number should now match what's printed on your RAM.

Before you change this. XMP and EXPO are standard, reversible settings, but a wrong memory profile can occasionally stop the machine from booting until you reset the BIOS. Write down your current settings first, and don't touch any other tab while you're in there. If you are not comfortable doing this, bring the machine to the store and we will do it while you wait.

If it didn't work

If the PC won't boot after enabling XMP, most boards recover on their own within two restart attempts, or you can clear CMOS with the button on the back of the case if there is one. If it boots but the speed still looks wrong, try Profile 2 if your kit has one, or check your motherboard's QVL, the qualified vendor list, the compatibility list a manufacturer publishes for tested RAM. Some boards need a BIOS update before higher speeds will run stable. If none of that gets you there, bring your motherboard model and RAM kit to the store and we'll check compatibility in a few minutes.

One thing we wouldn't do: keep pushing past the kit's rated XMP profile into manual timings and voltages you're guessing at. That's a different, riskier project than what this article covers, and it isn't necessary to get the speed you already paid for.

Why does RAM default to a slower speed in the first place?

The industry standard, called JEDEC, guarantees a conservative speed that works on essentially every board without any tuning. Anything faster than that is technically an overclock of the memory controller, even though it's completely routine and validated by the kit's manufacturer. XMP and EXPO are just Intel's and AMD's names for a saved profile that applies that tested overclock in one click instead of setting voltage and timings by hand.

Does RAM speed actually matter, or is amount all that counts?

Amount matters more, but speed isn't nothing. Going from JEDEC default to rated XMP speed is usually a bigger real-world gain than most people expect, particularly on AMD platforms where the memory controller and infinity fabric are more sensitive to it. On Intel it matters less but is still free performance you already paid for.

Editing and compression workloads tend to notice it more than gaming does, since they move larger amounts of data through memory continuously rather than in short bursts. If your machine is mostly for gaming, the RAM amount you have still matters more than whether it's running at 5600MHz or 6000MHz.

Should you check XMP support before buying a RAM kit?

Yes, and it's the step most people skip. Look up your exact motherboard model's QVL page before buying, not after. A kit not on the list can still work, boards are usually more flexible than the list suggests, but it isn't guaranteed, and finding that out after opening the box is the wrong time.

This matters more on budget boards than premium ones. Cheaper motherboards often have simpler memory controllers and a narrower range of kits they'll run at full rated speed without manual tuning.

We check this on almost every machine that comes in for a slowdown complaint that turns out not to be a slowdown at all. The RAM was never running at its rated speed to begin with, sometimes since the day it was built by someone else. It's a two minute fix and most people have never heard of it.

FAQ

Is enabling XMP safe?

Yes. It's a profile tested and published by your RAM's manufacturer for that exact kit, not a manual overclock you're guessing at. Millions of PCs run with it enabled by default from the factory.

Why doesn't my PC enable XMP automatically?

Motherboards default to the safest possible setting so any RAM kit will boot on any board, even one it wasn't really designed for. Turning on the rated speed is left as a manual step.

My RAM still shows the wrong speed after enabling XMP. Why?

Usually a BIOS that needs updating, or a kit running on a board it isn't officially validated for. Check your motherboard's QVL page for your exact kit before assuming the RAM itself is faulty.

Does XMP void my warranty?

No. XMP and EXPO profiles are supported and published by the RAM manufacturer specifically for warranty-safe use. Manual voltage changes beyond the profile are a different matter.

What's the difference between XMP and EXPO?

Same idea, different company. XMP is Intel's version, EXPO is AMD's. Most modern kits ship with both profiles stored, so the same stick of RAM often works at rated speed on either platform.
